Remembering Professor Graham Peirson, Former Deputy Chair of the AASB

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Professor Graham Peirson, a prominent accounting academic and author, and a former member of the Australian Accounting Standards Board (2000-2002).

Professor Peirson served on the Public Sector Accounting Standards Board (1990-1999) and was the author of the Peirson Report, the 1990 study commissioned by the Australian Accounting Research Foundation, in which he reported on local and overseas standard-setting procedures before making recommendations for revamping standard-setting arrangements in Australia.

Former AASB Chair, Mr. Kevin Stevenson, remembers him fondly: "I had the privilege of working with Graham from the 1970s onwards. Apart from his significant contribution to the academe, he participated in standard setting, the technical activities of his professional body and in its State Council and committees. He mentored a great many people who have had successful careers and was renowned for his thorough preparation for anything he undertook. Graham was a consummate professional who worked diligently for others over a long and successful career".

A long-time departmental head of accounting and finance at Monash University, Professor Peirson co-authored popular textbooks covering both finance and financial accounting.  In addition to serving as the Deputy Chair of the AASB in 2001, Professor Peirson also chaired the Victorian division of CPA Australia in 1985. He will be inducted later this year into the Australian Accounting Hall of Fame, which acknowledges his great contribution across many areas of accounting endeavour. As a friend and mentor to many of our current and former colleagues, he will be greatly missed.

Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Professor Graham Peirson’s memorial will be held at 4.00pm on Wednesday, 20 February, in the Garden Restaurant at the National Gallery of Victoria, for those wishing to attend.
